Alternate setting of choice? (Score: 1) by eanondson on Tue, May 20, 2003 (User Info | Send a Message) | The setting I've borrowed most from for my Greyhawk campaigns is Harn. A close second is Mystara though.
Harn is a treasure trove for Greyhawkian ideas.

Re: Which alternate world/setting is your favorite to borrow (Score: 0) by Anonymous on Fri, May 23, 2003 | I must agree with the princple idea of Harn and its very medieval and realistic approach to the gaming scene with a good dash of mine own opinion which I apply to the WoG. Magic and magical items, swords, and the use of gold is rare in my home campaigns. Silver is the main currency, swords are mainly found in the larger city's and reflect the culture of the land (i.e.: broadsword = Perrenland, scimitar = Exbir, etc...), magic is wonderous with certain lands more familar (thus the Arcane Universities) while other lands/kingdoms live in fear and suspicion and are more religiously ruled. Magical items in turn are rare and a great find indeed. I explain potions and the like away with apothocaries and priests and alchemists. Magic has a heavy historical play with lots of ancient magical mysteries and ruins. Welcome to my WoGreyhawk. Creative Lic. is awesome!!

Re: Which alternate world/setting is your favorite to borrow (Score: 1) by Issak_the_Pale on Sun, May 25, 2003 (User Info | Send a Message) http://www.ThePale.org | After Maldin and Holian introduced me to Harn, I'm hooked. When I need shops, cities and other realistic concepts and ideas, there's nothing better. Of course with the proliferation of fr material, certain things (nothing in particular) have been influenced by it. Besides Harn, I've found that Kalamar products often work well within the lands of Greyhawk. I particulary like their african like nations, as well as AEsheba for ideas in detailing the Olman.
I find that most of my ideas come from GreyTalk. I've often used concepts and ideas that have been spawned there. I have a saved GT folder - which includes posts from several years ago. I enjoyed the Ecology of the Orc - which made me question the viability of an Orcan nation. I plan on using concepts brought forth by the Epic Character Motivation in Greyhawk listing from a few months ago. The histories and descriptions of personal campaigns give rise to being able to describe the going ons in other regions. If the PC's need to know things relating to other regions in the world, I pull things from what was posted. What a great resource. If you want to know what's going on in The Pale, check out my latest posting - the Hegemony Wars. The Pale kicks ass. |

The Sarista gypsy-folk, for example, proved an invaluable resource on which to base Rhenn culture. I’ve also used the old Midkemia Press city books, “Carse” and “Tulan,” which fit in the setting nicely, particularly if you want some low-magic material (though it’s very scalable).

Re: Which alternate world/setting is your favorite to borrow (Score: 1) by Falconer (ulmo@mux.net) on Thu, June 05, 2003 (User Info | Send a Message) http://ulmo.mux.net/greyhawk/ | I see Dragonlance put down a lot among WoG fans. Sometimes it is with good reason, sometimes it is bitterness that DL was the first setting to usurp WoG's popularity. Personally, I prefer WoG, but DL in my opinion has many compatible and interesting developments.
Most of DL's ideas came out of WoG, anyway. DL took these ideas and focused on them and developed them. DL's portrayal of Bahamut and Tiamat, for example, will always be strong in my mind, as will the interesting take on Orbs of Dragonkind. A lawful good organization akin to the dragon-riding Knights of Solamnia might have a place in my campaign. There are a few good monsters, etc.
In other words, it's a mixed bag. No way will I have kender or tinker gnomes. On a more silly night, gully dwarves wouldn't be so bad. Regards. |
